How the AI tools landscape actually works
The AI space is noisy. Thousands of tools launch every month, most of them thin wrappers around the same handful of APIs. Here's a practical framework for cutting through the noise:
Foundation models : ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and open-source alternatives like Llama and Mistral. These are the engines that power most other AI tools. If a tool doesn't tell you what model it uses, it's probably reselling one of these with a UI on top.
Specialized tools : The valuable layer. Tools like Cursor (coding), ElevenLabs (voice), Midjourney (images), and Descript (video) take a foundation model and wrap it in a workflow designed for a specific job. These are worth paying for because the workflow matters more than the raw model.
Workflow integrations : AI features built into tools you already use. Notion AI, Figma AI, Grammarly, GitHub Copilot. Often the most practical option because there's nothing new to learn.
What to look for
- Does it solve a specific problem? Vague promises of "AI-powered productivity" usually mean a ChatGPT wrapper. Good tools solve one thing well.
- What model does it use? Knowing this helps you compare value. If a tool charges $50/month for GPT-4 access, check whether the ChatGPT Plus subscription at $20/month does the same thing.
- Can you try it free? Most legitimate AI tools offer a free tier or trial. If they require a credit card before you can test anything, be cautious.
